WLRN Presented National Award for Best Historical Documentary in Public Television Programming

WLRN Wins Documentary Honors at NETA 2009. Muhammad Ali: Made in Miami was named 2008's finest history documentary when the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) honored twenty-three public broadcasters with awards Thursday on stage at Hyatt Regency in Tampa, Florida.

    MIAMI, FL, January 28, 2009 /Television PR News/ -- WLRN, South Florida's PBS station, has been honored with a prestigious award from the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) during a luncheon at their annual conference, held this year in Tampa, FL. The award was given for the WLRN local production Muhammad Ali: Made in Miami, as public televisions best work for a historical documentary in the program production category and was one of 39 presented this year. Muhammad Ali: Made in Miami, is a documentary that explores the critical role that Miami played in the evolution of one of the most significant cultural figures of our time: Muhammad Ali. The event held on Thursday, January 15th also honored other public television stations in the areas of program production, promotion, outreach, and instructional media.

The NETA Awards are annual recognition of member-produced excellence in public broadcasting, a tradition established more than forty years ago by the pioneering Southern Educational Communications Association. NETA is a professional association founded in 1997 to serve public television licensees and affiliated educational organizations.

WLRN is also excited to announce that Muhammad Ali: Made in Miami was given recognition as the top sports documentary by Sports Illustrated Magazine, in their December 22nd issue - "The Year In Sports Media." Sports Illustrated has over 3 million subscribers and is read by 23 million adults each week, including over 18 million men, 19% of the adult males in the United States. It was the first magazine with circulation over one million to win the National Magazine Award for General Excellence twice.
